Top, and Richard J. Deseret Book, , — Missionary Service Each year, nearly 30, Latter-day Saint young adults leave their homes to serve missions in various countries throughout the world for the purpose of converting others to the tenets of the Church. Once these young adults return home from their missionary service, many go on to further their education, begin a career, marry, and establish a family. Returned missionaries are a unique group in the Church and are often a point of interest in family, Church, and other social settings. Parents, for example, note the challenges their returned missionaries face as they make the transition from the mission field to the home. Parents sometimes observe a raised level of stress that occurs as their sons or daughters shift from the focus of the mission to the focus of school, work, and dating. Ward and stake leaders also have an interest in returned missionaries, often giving them counsel and encouragement as well as assigning them the most suitable Church callings during the transitional time. Hinckley emphasized the importance of this duty to Church leaders when he said:
Meeting with Mormon Missionaries
My Talk on Missionary Work Author: Paul Wilson So, tomorrow I have to give a talk on missionary work, and I hope you will endulge me as I share it with you. My Bishop particularly wanted me to focus on how to be a missionary even if you are not an outgoing person. No matter what, it was good to sit down and put my thoughts into words. Feel free to let me know you what you think. I was tracking in my third area, in a city named Corona, and it was Halloween.
March 6, I did not grow up in a religious home. So I went through my childhood always wondering about God but really never knowing him. The funny thing is though, that in my heart I always had the feeling that one day I would find God and serve him. The thing was, that they were right and ‘my church’ was in error! After I graduated I went active duty thinking that this was the best thing I could do for myself.
I hated full time military service and I was always sick. I was able to get an earlier release and I moved to Illinois to live with a girl I had been dating. When I got settled in, I took a job working for Ford Security at one of their plants. There was this guy who always witnessed to me about Christ. One day I went to his church and I heard about being born again.
Talking Walls: Confessions of a Single Mormon Girl
My child is involved with the Mormons! What can I do? By Richard Packham Over the last few years I have received hundreds of unsolicited e-mails like the following: Our son has been dating a Mormon girl and is planning to be baptized Mormon so that he can marry her at her temple she insists that she must be married in a Mormon ceremony.
A date is a planned activity that allows a young man and a young woman to get to know each other better. In cultures where dating is acceptable, it can help you learn and practice social skills, develop friendships, have wholesome fun, and eventually find an eternal companion.
John Walsh Since a major component of the gospel is the concept of eternal marriage , Latter-day Saints are encouraged to only date and marry faithful members of the Church. This is because only faithful members of the Church can enter a holy temple and be married for time and all eternity. In other words, Latter-day Saints believe that when two people enter into temple marriage i. Members are encouraged to stay away from any path which might take them away from this great blessing.
The Church recognizes the legal validity of non-temple marriages. However, while temple marriages extend beyond death [if both parties are faithful], non-temple marriages are only “until death do you part. If both spouses will live their lives in accordance with the Lord’s will, then these priesthood blessings will enhance their marriage in ways not otherwise possible.

Steady dating can keep us from meeting new people and going on dates with others, and ultimately we miss out on bigger opportunities in life. Steady dating can ruin our parents’ trust in us. Steady dating can lead to other sins, such as lying, losing the Holy Ghost, and ultimately jeopardizing our worthiness for a mission and the temple.

Gradually, all India and the neighboring island of Ceylon were converted. Dharmaraksa came to the Chinese capital of Luoyang in CE, where he made the first known translations of the Lotus Sutra and the Dasabhumika Sutra , which were to become some of the classic texts of Chinese Mahayana Buddhism. Sister Missionary Dies After Touching Electrical Wire, Church Makes Statement
I remember feeling such longing to be like Scout, who never cared what anyone thought of her. So while writing for this blog, I would like to be called Scout, if only to encompass a little of her bravery and boldness. I had a normal childhood growing up. I was born and raised in the LDS church, and from a very young age, was taught that marriage, eternal marriage in particular, should be one of the top priorities in your life. My parents have a fantastic marriage, one that I aspire to have someday.
For Latter-day Saints, the beard debate has continued for decades, but aside from missionary standards and the BYU beard policy, little has been officially said about the topic. While people are divided on the subject today, beards were widely accepted and even encouraged during the early s.
Why do some women feel unequal in the church? While this was not an exhaustive list, it made apparent many of the gender disparities that we often take for granted. Another way to make inequality apparent is to talk about privilege. An important step in lessening, mitigating and ending this discrimination is acknowledging it.
It is sometimes easier to see that others have different gender roles or even that women have some disadvantages. The truly difficult thing to recognize is the concomitant truth: Do not despair, this is not an attack on men. Rather it is a mental exercise in trying to see those aspects of gender inequality that are normally hidden in our religious culture. Men and women alike are taught not to recognize our privileges or as Dr. It is not the fault of the holder of these privileges that he has them.
However, it is our moral and ethical duty to learn to recognize, mitigate and lessen them for greater religious gender equality. I decided to try to identify some of the daily effects of these advantages in order to answer the question: What is it like to have Mormon male privilege? Many of these points have corollaries in literature on white and male privilege.

What do you call a woman who is half-Mormon, half-Jewish? A polygamist who dislikes sex! Why are prison officials stating Polygamist leader Warren Jeffs is now hospitalized after not eating, drinking enough? Apparently, he prefers kids meals. How many Mormons does it take to change a light bulb?
A prospective missionary receiving the call to serve is generally considered to be a major event in LDS culture; family members, friends, and members of the prospective missionary’s congregation often gather together when a call arrives, which the prospective missionary opens and reads aloud to the group.
See results Things to Do on a Date First, let’s clear up one piece of confusion. Just because Mormons avoid some activities does not mean they’re no fun to be with. Once you hang out with a group of LDS people of any age, you may find them to be as fun and funny as anyone else you’ve met, but also very considerate, caring, supportive of each other, and accepting of others. What do Mormons do for fun? It’s not unusual to find them dancing on weekend nights.
Music and dancing have long been popular with church members, and if you’re in an area that has Mormon chapels nearby, you are likely to find regular dances held usually in the cultural hall of the chapel for teens, young adults, and single adults older than Music at the dances can be either from a live band or a DJ, and there will usually be some sort of snacks or refreshments available. The dances are free, there’s no alcohol, and as is consistent with church policy people are asked to avoid suggestive dance moves and to dress modestly.
Mormons also love to go to movies, play sports several well-known professional athletes are LDS, including former NFL quarterback Ty Detmer and major baseball player Jeff Kent , play jokes on each other, go camping, do service projects, swim at the beach, snow ski, picnic, you name it.

Makes You Think I never had the goal to marry an Apostle. My goal was to draw close to Heavenly Father and make my life as meaningful and happy as I could. Because I value and believe in the plan of salvation, I wanted all the blessings associated with it. That included someday, in this life or the next, finding a companion that I loved and respected, a man I could trust and depend on, who would be loyal to me and active in the Church.
