Woman, behold thy son. After that, he saith to the disciple: And from that hour, the disciple took her to his own. In the midst of the greatest agony ever suffered by any human being, the last gift offered by Jesus Christ before His death on the Cross was the gift of His Mother to His disciple John, and through John to all men. I was set up from eternity, and of old before the earth was made…. I was with him forming all things:
Crucifixion of Jesus
Three Studies for Figures at the Base of a Crucifixion, c. Purchased from the artist by Eric Hall, Exhibited: Ballet, Films, Music, Painting, London , p. Art Today in Great Britain , vol. Guggenheim, New York , pp.
The crucifixion of Jesus occurred in 1st-century Judea, most likely between AD 30 and Jesus’ crucifixion is described in the four canonical gospels, referred to in the New Testament epistles, attested to by other ancient sources, and is established as a historical event confirmed by non-Christian sources, although there is no consensus among historians on the exact details.

Very interesting to hear genuine account of Native American life, my feeling is that peoples perception of ‘Indians’ is largely influenced by films of the fifties and sixties. In reality we are dealing with many races of people over a vast geographical area and a massive time span, dating back to the early bronze age. So the traditions of the ninteenth century Sioux would have been much different from the seventh century Crow.
Also, there is very little written history, so we are relying on word of mouth, passed down through the ages.
According to the Bible, God killed or authorized the killings of up to 25 million people. This is the God of which Jesus was an integral part.
Radiocarbon Dating of the Shroud of Turin by P. Tite6 Reprinted from Nature, Vol. As Controls, three samples whose ages had been determined independently were also dated. The results provide conclusive evidence that the linen of the Shroud of Turin is mediaeval. The Shroud of Turin , which many people believe was used to wrap Christ’s body, bears detailed front and back images of a man who appears to have suffered whipping and crucifixion.
It was first displayed at Lirey in France in the s and subsequently passed into the hands of the Dukes of Savoy. After many journeys the shroud was finally brought to Turin in where, in , it was placed in the royal chapel of Turin Cathedral in a specially designed shrine. Photography of the shroud by Secondo Pia in indicated that the image resembled a photographic ‘negative’ and represents the first modern study.
Subsequently the shroud was made available for scientific examination, first in and by a committee appointed by Cardinal Michele Pellegrino 1 and then again in by the Shroud of Turin Research Project STURP 2. Even for the first investigation, there was a possibility of using radiocarbon dating to determine the age of the linen from which the shroud was woven. To confirm the feasibility of dating the shroud by these methods an intercomparison, involving four AMS and two small gas-counter radiocarbon laboratories and the dating of three known-age textile samples, was coordinated by the British Museum in The results of this intercomparison are reported and discussed by Burleigh et al.

Antiquities of the Jews by Josephus , a source for the chronology of Jesus. Nativity of Jesus and Date of birth of Jesus The date of birth of Jesus of Nazareth is not stated in the gospels or in any secular text, but most scholars assume a date of birth between 6 BC and 4 BC, but nobody knows the exact date.
However, some consistent elements are evidently derived from a common early tradition:

The title of this triptych refers to figures sometimes depicted at the foot of the cross in religious paintings. Bacon later related themto The Eumenides, vengeful furies of Greek myth. Typically, he drew on various sources, including photography.
Roman Catholics, Protestants, and Anglicans, as well as members of the Armenian Apostolic Church , all celebrated Easter very early this year, on 23 March. Meanwhile, it is still one week until Passover and two weeks until Orthodox Easter. I am still looking at two more weeks of fasting, while my Anglo-Catholic friends are already half-way to the Ascension! It has long been a principle of the Church that all Christians should celebrate the Resurrection on the same day. A number of councils, such as the Synod of Whitby , tried to get all the Christians in a region on the same page with respect to the date of Easter.
How did we get to the current anomalous situation? The early rule adopted by the Churches of Rome and Alexandria was that Easter should be observed on the first Sunday after Passover. Passover, the 15th of Nisan on the Jewish calendar, would normally fall on the day of the first full moon on or after the vernal equinox. At that time the date of Passover, as observed by rabbinical Jews, depended upon observation of nature, not computation.
The Roman version of the rule ensured that Easter would always be observed after Passover. If Passover fell on Sunday, then Easter would be celebrated on the following Sunday.

In fact, the NEB, Dr. In so doing they have all fallen into what ought to have been a fairly obvious error. The Crucifixion was at the time of the Passover, when the moon is of necessity at the full, and there cannot be an eclipse of the sun at full moon. Furthermore, the darkness is said to have continued for the space of three hours whereas the longest time that an eclipse of the sun can persist at any one place is seven minutes.
Whatever the nature of this rather mysterious darkness, it certainly was not an eclipse. The happening is mentioned in Matt. Matthew and Mark would have been eye witnesses: Luke got his information from someone who had been an eye-witness. Matthew says that there was an earthquake at the same time; the others say nothing about this.
Apart from that remark, the three accounts are identical in detail and this points to a very clear and undisputed recollection of what actually took place. Throughout all time since the event, this darkness has been accepted as having actually occurred and generally taken as a sign of Divine displeasure with those then guilty of the condemnation of the Lord. Matthew’s statement that the Veil of the Temple was rent in twain, throwing the sacred Most Holy open to public view at this time, is taken as pointing to the same conclusion.
Confirming evidence that this darkness did in fact occur is extant from a secular source.

I lay down my life in order to take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down freely. This scene of the Crucifixion follows an ancient Byzantine model dating from the late fourth century.
Update: After reading our original article on the Shroud of Turin and its carbon dating, a USA college student writing a thesis on the subject asked us a series of questions regarding our skepticism towards the Shroud of we’ve rehashed this page to include our answers since they provide yet more reasons to reject the shroud as authentic. This eclipse is particularly rare for its accessibility. The path of most total eclipses falls over water or unpopulated regions of the planet. For anyone who plans to check out the summer eclipse, remember to NEVER look directly at the sun without proper eye protection, except during the brief period of totality when the moon has moved completely between the sun and Earth.
Because the sun was a symbol of the emperor, an eclipse was seen as a warning to the leader. Part of the inscription reads: Three flames ate the Sun, and big stars were seen. A total solar eclipse seen from Xiamen, China, on May 20, Later historians used astronomy to pinpoint the death of Christ based on this eclipse mention.

Tacitus has two references to patibulo adfixus in 12 and 13 , which are clear references to crucifixion on a crux compacta. In 14 , references to the patibulum and crux are paralleled with references to carnage and arson. One further reference to the patibulum occurs in Annals 1. A number of other references to the two-timbered cross or at least, hanging from a patibulum can be found in the literature.

Reflections in the Light of the Incarnation Wednesday, April 23, Dating the Crucifixion The Synaxarion readings we use at my church during Holy Week have one feature that strikes me as very odd: Last night at Bridegroom Matins , for example, the Synaxarion that I read to the congregation said that the day when Judas agreed to betray Jesus was Wednesday, which corresponded to 21 March. Counting forward, this implies that the Crucifixion occurred on the 23rd, and the Resurrection occurred on the 25th.
I have been unable to track down the source of this chronology. I am aware of two dates that were assigned to the Crucifixion by early Christians. The first was 6 April. Later on, for some reason, this date was displaced by 25 March. It is no mere coincidence that these dates precede Theophany and Christmas, respectively, by nine months, but the dates of those feasts were based on the date of the Christ’s death, not vice versa. I’ll skip that tangent for now and save it for a separate post in December.
Modern scholars have attempted to determine the date of the Crucifixion by reconstructing the Jewish lunar calendar for the range of years in which Christ might have died.
How Jesus died: Extremely rare evidence of Roman crucifixion uncovered in Italy
December 09, Common Questions Answered Add Comment “And when the sixth hour had come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour. This darkness was most definitely a result of God’s direct intervention, because it can’t have been a solar eclipse for the following two reasons: The maximum duration for a total solar eclipse is seven minutes, not three hours, and at the latitude of Jerusalem the maximum duration is even less. A solar eclipse can occur only at new moon, but we know that Jesus was crucified at the time of Passover Matthew But it is also confirmed by four other historians outside the Bible:
The Crucifixion darkness is an episode in three of the canonical gospels in which the sky becomes dark in daytime during the crucifixion of Jesus.. Christian apologist Tertullian in AD considered this not an eclipse but a portent, which he claimed was recorded in Roman third-century Christian commentator Origen offered two natural explanations for the darkness: that it might.
Seventy Sevens of Years til the coming of the Messiah The Bible’s bold declaration that it is the divine and protected word of God is supported by any number of amazing, seemingly impossible prophecies and their fulfillments. Matthew 24 Another fine example can be found in the book of Daniel Ch. This was the one that alerted Simeon Luke 2: The Ancient Hebrews did not use decades as they were a Greek invention, they used “weeks” of seven years each.
In Biblical years , days- The Babylonian calendar was predicated on a day year. Secular history provides a concrete record of the day in B. Archives of Persian kings – Encyclopedia Britannica when Artaxerxes gave the commandment to Nehemiah to rebuild Jerusalem, it gave the starting point for Daniel’s countdown to Palm Sunday! Counting it down, we see again from secular history’s records of the Messiah’s triumphant entry into Jerusalem on April 6, 32 A. Just as wise men saw then from the scriptures it was time for his coming, wise men of today see his coming is at hand.
Compare the exactness of these with the vagueness of the prophecies of Nostradamus for example. Don’t believe me – look it up! Where did the Bible come from? Before written language, God’s people passed his word down from generation to generation by word of mouth, or song.
